Sports Injury

Why Should an Athlete See a Chiropractor?

From the NFL to the Olympics, many professional sports teams and athletes have incorporated chiropractic care into their wellness routines. Whether you’re a middle school, high school or college athlete, or an adult that loves to stay active, we’re all athletes.

Athletes of all ages and abilities routinely and continually put their bodies through physical stress. Participating in sports often involves quick starts and stops, explosive jumping and running, collisions, and atypical postures. All of these affect the body by adding physical stress to the structure of the body, including the nervous system. When stress overcomes the ability of the body to adapt and recover, injury occurs. Before injury, you may notice other effects of accumulated stress such as decrease range of motion, less flexibility, decreased speed, or longer recovery times.

When Should an Athlete See a Chiropractor?

The short answer is, as soon as possible. The excessive physical stress that sports put on the body began accumulating from the moment you or your child began training. The sooner this stress on the body is resolved, the better. If the stress is not resolved, injuries may occur. In addition, your ligaments, tendons, and muscles need a properly aligned base (your bones) to grow, mature, and strengthen properly to avoid injury.

How Can Chiropractic Help Athletes?

At Essentials of Life Chiropractic, our doctors are trained to evaluate and correct the misalignments of the spine and extremities that may have occurred from sports or other repetitive motions. By creating an aligned base, your muscles, tendons, and ligaments are strengthened in their proper position. Furthermore, chiropractic has been shown to reduce injuries, increase flexibility and mobility, improve recovery from sports injuries, and improve performance. Whether your child is just starting sports or you’re nursing and old sports injury, give our office a call to schedule your personalized consultation and examination.
