Disc Injury

What is a Disc?

The bones of your spine are separated by cushions called intervertebral discs. These discs serve as shock absorbers within your spine. Each disc is composed of a tough outer ring and a soft gel-like center. Disc injuries occur when the soft gel-like material pushes on or through the tough outer ring, which can irritate the nearby nerves.

What Causes a Disc Injury?

As we age, our discs often lose the fluid that makes them flexible, which may make someone more prone to a disc injury. A disc injury can occur with minor repetitive strain or twisting of the spine such as turning your head or twisting your low back. Disc injuries can also be caused by whiplash, car accidents, or other traumatic injuries.

What Are the Symptoms of a Disc Injury?

The most common symptoms of a disc injury include back or neck pain. A disc injury in the neck may cause other symptoms like headaches, numbness and tingling in the arms and hands, or pain in the shoulders and arms.

A disc herniation in the low back may cause other symptoms such as numbness and tingling in the legs and feet, muscle cramps, or lightning-like pain in the legs.
